Or, directed at someone, you aren't particularly good at any of the many tasks you seem to undertake
Literal Origins: Trades, in this context, means a job such as a carpenter, plumber or builder et cetera and the proverb tells us that trying our hand at all the trades will make us unable to master any of them. Highly skilled trades people are often called Master Builders, Master Carpenters, Master Craftsmen and so on.
Common Usage: This proverb is very popular and often quoted exactly as written as a semi-jovial warning to someone trying to do too many different kinds of jobs, especially in a work environment.
The proverb is also used in the shorter form: "Jack of all trades" when describing someone who does many kinds of jobs around the workplace. For instance when observing a colleague who seems to do all the odd jobs around the office someone might says, "he's a Jack of all trades that one" and someone may reply, cynically, "yeah, and master of none".
Furthermore it is very common for people of below average intelligence to misunderstand the meaning of the proverb, thinking it describes them in a positive light for being able to fix or do many different things, and used thusly when describing themselves: "I'm a Jack of all trades" to which, if there happens to be a brighter, slightly cynical person nearby, someone may add: "Yeah, and a master of none". In fact the phrase is so well-known in this context that it is almost an automatic reaction to say "Yeah, and a master of none" when one hears someone described as a "Jack of all trades".

 온튜 OnTue.COM
수 만명의 온라인 영어 강사 실시간 채팅 및 강사 정보 제공. 사진, 동영상, 이력서, 전화번호 정보 공개!
http://ontue.com
