When people complain about the weather, such as, “It always rains when I want to play golf,”

they say it with no intention to change the weather, or even, at that moment, to move to a

drier climate or buy a rain suit and adapt. Many complaints at work are like complaints about

the weather. People do not intend to do anything to resolve the complaint, and often have

no solutions in mind. Even where solutions exist, or could be developed, the complainer does

not intend to be the one who will push for implementing them. Complaints about anything ─

the weather or a problem at work or at home ─ which lack a commitment to create or work

toward a solution, are simply a distraction to everyone within earshot. Uncommitted

complaints do not produce any good results, and have a negative effect on morale and

“내가 골프를 치고 싶을 때는 항상 비가 오더라.”와 같이 날씨에 관한 불평을 할 때, 사람들은 날씨를 바

꾸려 하거나, 심지어 그때 비가 더 오지 않는 기후로 이동하거나 비옷을 사서 적응하려는 의도 없이 그렇

게 말하는 것이다. 직장에서 하는 많은 불평은 날씨에 관해 하는 불평과 같다. 사람들은 불평거리를 해결

하기 위해서 어떤 일도 하고자 하지 않으며, 흔히 어떠한 해결책도 염두에 두고 있지 않다. 심지어 해결

책이 존재하거나 개발될 수 있는 경우조차도, 불평하는 사람은 그러한 것들을 실행에 옮기려고 애쓰는

사람이 되려는 의도가 없다. 해결책을 만들거나 그것을 향해 애쓰는 노력이 결여된, 날씨나 직장 또는 집

안 문제와 같은 어떤 것에 대한 불평은 (그 불평 소리가) 들리는 범위 안에 있는 모든 사람들의 주의를

산만하게 하는 존재일 뿐이다. 행동으로 옮기지 않은 불평은 어떠한 좋은 결과도 가져오지 않으며, 사기

와 업무 수행에 부정적인 영향을 미친다.
