They take the primary role in caring for grandchildren and are instrumental in maintaining family traditions. In terms of gender roles, while there is notable progress towards equality, traditional expectations still exist where men are typically the primary wage earners and women are responsible for domestic activities. Age is important in the Philippines because it signifies respect, authority, and wisdom. Those in middle age are generally in a position of respect and leadership within their family and community. However, in recent years, a shift has been observed in the Filipino society with regards to family dynamics and middle age due to factors such as urbanization and western influence. More women are joining the workforce, there's noticeable individualism among youth and the middle-aged group is continuously expanding its role in both family and society, which includes seeing some of them picking up new hobbies, continuing education or starting a new career. Regardless, the filial piety and respect ingrained in the Filipino culture remain highlighted.
