MANILA, Philippines – A magnitude 6.2 earthquake hit Negros Occidental and nearby provinces and cities on Tuesday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

Mr. Rolando Montañez, PHIVOLCS Science Research Specialist, said the earthquake hit the province at 4:47 a.m.. The earthquake's intensity was highest in Sipalay City, Negros Occidental.

No one was reported hurt in the incident. Several fishermen were evacuated in Sipalay City for fear of a tsunami in the South China Sea.

The earthquake was felt at Intensity 5  in Sipalay City; Intensity IV in Oton, Iloilo, Dumaguete City, and the towns of Binalbagan, Hinigaran in Negros Occidental and Sibulan, Negros Oriental; Intensity 3 in San Jose in Antique, Dapitan City in Zamboanga del Norte, Talisay City in Cebu; Intensity 2 in Cagayan de Oro City, Dipolog City and La Carlotta City, Negros Occidental; and Intensity 1 in La Castellana, Negros Occidental.

PHIVOLCS said it expects aftershocks but no damages.

The offshore earthquake was tectonic in origin.

Two more earthquakes were later felt in Negros Occidental at 5:03 a.m. with a magnitude of 5.7, and 5:05 a.m. with a magnitude of 5.5.

Montañez said the earthquake was caused by the moving of the Philippine Fault.

미국지질조사국(USGS)은 12일 오전 4시47분(현지시간)께 필리핀 네그로스 섬 두마게테에서 서쪽으로 126㎞ 정도 떨어진 지점에서 규모 6.2의 지진이 발생했다고 밝혔다.

진앙은 북위 9.53도, 동경 122.17도의 깊이 19㎞ 지점이다. 필리핀 수도 마닐라에서는 576㎞ 정도 떨어져있다.

지진 이후 오전 5시3분께 규모 5.1의 여진도 잇따랐다.

지진으로 인한 쓰나미 경보는 발령되지 않았으며, 현재까지 별다른 피해 상황도 보고되지 않고 있다.
