Baguio Koreans pay back city hospitality

바기오 한인들이 바기오시의 환대에 보답하다.

BAGUIO CITY—The summer capital’s Korean community has made education a bridge to give back to its host city.

여름수도인 바기오 거주 한인들이 바기오시에 감사하기위해 교육의 다리를 놓다.

Last week, 31 Koreans belonging to the nongovernment group, Good Hands in Luzon Philippines, met with the 31 indigent college students whose education they are financing.

지난주 비영리단체인 사단법인 굿핸즈의 31명의 한인들은 31명의 어려운 환경에서 공부하는 장학생과 만났다.

These Korean sponsors are mostly professionals and businessmen who have been living and running various establishments in Baguio for more than 10 years now. The city is home to about 10,000 Koreans, many of them students learning the English language here.

이들 한인후원자들은 대부분 지금까지 10년 이상 바기오에서 거주하면서 다양한 업체를 운영하며 살고 있는 사업가와 전문인들이다.  바기오시는 만명의 한인들의 터전이며, 많은 수의 학생들이 이곳에서 영어를 배우고 있다.

Husky Ryu, Good Hands chair, said supporting the education of poor but deserving Filipino students is a way of uplifting their lives.

굿핸즈 대표인 류정호는 가난하지만 우수한 필리핀학생들의 교육을 지원하는것은 그들의 삶을 향상시키는 하나의 방법이라 말했다.

“We are very happy to do this because we really want to share our blessings. Koreans have been wanting to help and they have been doing that individually. But now, we have a group, so it is easier to extend what we want to share to the people of Baguio,” said Ryu.

류대표는 "우리는 이렇게 하는것이 매우 행복합니다. 왜냐하면 우리는 우리가 받은것을 진정으로 나누고 싶습니다. 많은 한인들은 현지인들에게 도움을 주고자 합니다. 그들은 또한 개인적으로 지금 그렇게 하고 있습니다. 하지만 지금. 우린 하나의 단체를 만들었습니다. 따라서 지금 우리가 바기오분들을 돕기위해 하고자 하는것들이 단체를 통해 더욱 쉬워졌습니다." 라고 말했다.

Jung Gyu Choo, a restaurant owner, is supporting the education of Edson Soriano, 18, a Kankana-ey student from Bakun, Benguet.

한국식당을 운영하는 추정규씨는 18세인 벵켓주의 edson soriano를 후원하고 있다.

“This scholarship grant means a lot to me because I grew up in a very poor family, with a hand-to-mouth existence. We are 14 in the family, and I was the only one who reached college so the expectation is too high,” said Soriano, a junior accountancy student at the University of the Cordilleras (UC).

이장학금은 제게 많은 의미가 있습니다. 왜냐하면 전 하루벌어 하루먹는 그런 가난한 집에서 자랐습니다. 우리 가족은 모두 14명입니다. 그리고 저만 대학을 갔으며 저에대한 기대가 무척이나 큽니다. 라고 ud에서 회계학을 공부하는 소리아노는 말했다.

“My parents could not send my other siblings to school because they do not have money. My other siblings did not even finish elementary and high school,” he said.

나의 부모님은 다른 동생들을 학교에 보낼수 없습니다. 왜냐하면 그들은 돈이 없습니다. 다른 동생들은 심지어 초등학교도, 고등학교도 마치지 못했습니다. 라고 말했다.

Soriano promised to help Good Hands after he graduates to return the kindness and generosity that he received.

소리아노는 학교를 졸업후 굿핸즈에서 받은 친절과 환대를 잊지않겠다고 약속했다.

His sponsor, Jung, said: “I do not speak English that much, but I want to say that I am happy to help.”

그의 후원자인 추정규씨는 "전 비록 영어를 잘하지 못하지만 전 제가 누구를 돕는다는것이 무척 기쁩니다." 라고 말했다.

Another beneficiary, Kevin Kenneth Mitas, 17, a business administration student at the University of Baguio, promised not to squander the opportunity given by the Koreans.

또다른 장학금 수혜자인 17세 ub에서 경영학을 공부하는 케빈은 한인들에게 받은 기회를 결코 헛되이 하지 않겠다고 약속했다.

“We will keep moving forward to be somebody someday,” he said.

우리는 언젠가 훌륭한 사람이 되기위해 계속노력하겠습니다. 라고 그는 말했다.

Ryu said he was not expecting financial pledges from many Koreans for the scholarship program since the original target was to help only 12 students.

류정호 대표는 우리가 처음 12명의 장학생을 돕기위해 목표를 정했을때 많은 한인들이 재정적으로 참여를 할것이라 기대하지 않았다고 했다.

Each student receives P12,000 a year.

각학생은 1년에 12000페소를 받는다.

The scholars come from UB, UC, Baguio Central University, Benguet State University, Easter College, King’s College of the Philippines, Philippine Women’s University, Saint Louis University, University of the Philippines Baguio and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda).

장학생은 각 학교와 tesda로부터 추천되었다.

Ryu said the scholars are required to keep good grades and are encouraged to join Good Hands’ outreach and community projects. “We want to grow together with our scholars,” he said.

류정호 대표는 장학금을 받기위해서는 좋은성적을 유지하고 굿핸즈의 봉사활동에 참여하는것이 요구된다.  우리는 우리의 장학생들과 함께 성장하기를 원한다. 라고 말했다.

31 studs receive scholarships from Korean group

31명의 학생들이 한국인 단체로 부터 장학금을 받다.

THE GOOD Hands in Luzon Philippines awarded scholarships to 31 deserving students to ten universities and colleges in Baguio and La Trinidad at Wood Nymph Korean Restaurant July 22.

사단법인 굿핸즈는 지난 7월 22일 숲속의 요정 한국식당에서 바기오와 트리니다드에 있는 10개의 대학으로부터 장학생으로 선발된 31명의 학생들에게 장학금을 전달하였다.

There are 10 beneficiaries from TESDA; two each from Baguio Central University, Benguet State University, Easter College of Baguio, King’s College of the Philippines, St. Luis University, University of Baguio (UB), and University of the Cordillera; and one each from Philippine Women’s University and University of the Philippines.

테스다로부터 10명을 포함하여, 각대학에서 2명씩 선발되었다.(대학명 참조)

Good Hands President and HELP Foundation CEO Husky Ryu said these scholarship grantees are sponsored by Korean School Association and Korean Individuals. He added their aim is to help Filipino community who are in need and hopes numbers of sponsors will be increased to help more students.

굿핸즈의 대표이며 헬프어학원 원장인 류정호는 장학금은 학원연합회와 한인 몇 개인들에의해서 지급되었다고 말하였으며 도움이 필요한 필리핀 커뮤니티를 돕는것을 목표로 하고 있고, 더많은 학생들을 돕기위한 후원자의 수를 늘이기를 원한다고 말하였다.

In coordination with Commission on Higher Education, Good Hands provided these students with scholarships.

고등교육청의 협조로, 사단법인 굿핸즈는 이들 학생들에게 장학금을 전할수 있었다.

The scholarship shall be for two years starting on the third year of the student. An amount of P12, 000 a year or an equivalent of P1000 a month is given per qualified student.

이장학금은 3학년 학생에게 2년간 지급되며 자격에 준하는 학생에게 한달에 1000페소 또는 1년에 12000페소가 주어진다.

To be able to enjoy the grant, the student must show proof to the organization that he or she is able to maintain his or her academic grade.

장학금을 계속 받기위해서, 학생은 사단법인 굿핸즈에 장학금 수령의 기준이 되기위한 일정학점을 유지하고있다는것을 증명하여야 한다.

The organization is also encouraging them to join outreach projects provided the projects do not disrupt the student scholar’s academic schedules and duties.

사단법인 굿핸즈는 또한 장학금을 받는 학생들의 학업과 일정에 방해가 되지않는 범위에서 봉사활동 프로젝트를 제공하고 그것에 함께하도록 독려할것이다.

The personality and attitude of the scholar may be determined during his or her participation in the activities of the organization.

장학금을 받는 학생들의 인성과 태도등은 사단법인 굿핸즈의 봉사활동에 함께하면서 더욱 확고해 질것이다.

Good Hands is a non government founded and composed of Korean Nationals who have businesses in Baguio.

사단법인 굿핸즈는 비영리단체이며 바기오에서 사업을 하는 한인들로 구성이 되었다.

Together with Korean businessmen, Good Hands is also created with Korean Schools Association.

The organization was officially registered in January 2011. Even before its registration, various socio civic activities have been undertaken to help the Filipino community.

사단법인 굿핸즈는 한인사업과와 또한 학원연합회와 함께 설립되었다. 이단체는 2011년 1월에 공식적으로 등록되었으며, 등록이전부터 벌써 필리핀 커뮤니티를 돕기위한 활동들이 진행되어 왔다.

It aims to continuously be able to assist and support the Filipinos. As such, and apart from helping the street people, the organization grants scholarship to academically deserving but financially insufficient students.

이단체는  예를 들면, 거리의 걸인들을 돕거나,재정적으로 넉넉하지 못하지만 우수한 성적을 가진 학생들에게 장학금을 지원하는것과 같이 계속하여 필리핀 사람들을 돕고 지원하는것을 목표로 한다.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan in his speech expressed his gratitude to the organization. He said he was touched with the good deed of Good Hands for the students. He added the city government has thousand beneficiaries but still need support to cover all needy students who are competitive.

바기오 시장인 도모간은 그의 연설에서 사단법인 굿핸즈에 감사함을 전했다. 그는 학생들을 위해 좋은일을 하는 굿핸즈를 보고 감동 받았다고 전했다. 바기오 시정부도 천여명의 장학생을 지원하고 있지만 여전히 공부를 잘하나 학업을 위해 장학금이 필요한 학생들을 커버하기위한 더많은 지원이 필요하다고 거듭말하였다.

“Words are not enough to say ‘thank you’ to what you are doing to educate our students who are members of the unprivileged. As officials, we will do our part to help Koreans also .I hope this partnership will continue” said the mayor.

가난한 많은 수의 학생들을 계속 공부할수있게 도와주시는 여러분에게 감사하다는 이말로 충분한 표현이 될수없습니다. 저는 공식적으로 이자리에서 우리도 한인들을 도울수 있는 역활을 다하겠습니다. 우리의 동반자 관계는 계속될것입니다 라고 시장은 말했다.

Kenneth Miras, UB 2nd year Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, also expressed his gratitude to the helping hands.

바기오 대학 경영학부 2학년인 kenneth miras는 도움을 주는 분들에게 감사함을 전했다.

He said this is the opportunity of them, who came from indigent families, to continue their studies. “We are the students, academically and competitive who keeps on moving forward,” Miras added. He assured they will be maintaining their grades and it will be their pleasure to be the part of the family of Good Hands.

그는 가난한 가정의 학생들에게 공부할수 있는 기회를 그들에게 주었다고 하였다. "우리는 학생입니다. 공부하고 경쟁하며 앞으로나아가야 하는 학생입니다. 그리고 그는 우리는 우리의 성적을 계속 유지할것이며 굿핸즈의 가족의 일부가 된것에 감사합니다.가로 전했다.
