Bureau of Immigration forms deportation task force
The Bureau of Immigration has formed a deportation task force that will monitor cases filed against foreigners who violate Philippine immigration laws.
BI Commissioner Ricardo David Jr. issued a memorandum order last week creating the “deportation task force,” which will mostly have lawyers in the agency.
A BI news release quoted David as saying the task force aims to address the problem of delays in resolving and disposing deportation complaints against aliens charged with immigration law violations.
He said the task force has instructions to conduct a comprehensive inventory of all deportation cases.
David also stressed the need to finally resolve the cases of so-called overstaying inmates at the Bicutan jail so they could be deported.
Most of the detainees have languished in jail due to pending court cases, forcing the BI had to continuously shoulder the cost of their food and lodging, he added.
Named head of the task force was BI Acting Executive Director Eric Dimaculangan, with Department of Justice (DOJ) Senior Sate Prosecutor Roberto Lao as assistant head.
"Dimaculangan concurrently supervises the BI detention center in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City where aliens arrested for violating immigration laws are confined prior to their deportation," the BI said.
The task force's members include lawyers Jose Carlitos Licas, Antonio Rivera, Frederico Luis Trinidad, Sherwin Pascua, Elaine Tan, and Rommel Tacorda.
Under present rules, the BI cannot deport a detainee without a clearance from the court, police and National Bureau of Investigation.
Foreigners are expelled based on deportation orders issued by the BI board of commissioners.
All deportees are placed in the immigration blacklist to prevent them from re-entering the Philippines.
