44JJ2016Mental health is one's state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively, and can make a contribution to his or her community. This is crucial across all stages of life, including later life or old age.
In the Philippines, mental health in later life is given significant attention. The Philippines passed the Mental Health Act in 2018, aiming to improve mental health services and eliminate discrimination against people with mental health issues, including seniors.
Older adults may face various stressors such as loss of independence, loneliness, and the loss of loved ones, which can contribute to mental health issues like depression and anxiety. Philippine mental health interventions for seniors include promoting social interaction, providing therapy and counseling services, and implementing other mental health programs and services tailored for the elderly.
Urban areas often offer more accessible mental health facilities and services compared to rural ones. As such, accessibility may largely depend on one's location within the country. Some private nursing homes and elderly care facilities also offer specialized mental health care.
However, despite the efforts, it can be challenging since mental health is still stigmatized in the Philippines, sometimes causing reluctance among seniors to seek help. Thus, continuous education and advocacy are crucial to break the stigma surrounding mental health. As the population continues to age, the need for effective mental health interventions for older adults in the Philippines remains a relevant challenge.
