Johann Friedrich Herbart is known as one of the pioneers in education system due to his comprehensive and systematic theory of education. His major contribution was his idea of ‘pedagogical realism’ which emphasized that instruction should proceed from the familiar to the unfamiliar, thus making learning progressive and easier. Furthermore, he proposed a five-step teaching methodology which includes ‘Preparation’, ‘Presentation’, ‘Association’, 'Generalization’, and ‘Application’. Herbart also argued that education should be a process of moral development and character formation, creating well-rounded individuals. His approach that places emphasis on the importance of student interest and the social aspects of learning still impacts current educational practices and theories.
