What are the characteristics of Filipino Catholics?

Filipino Catholics are known for their deep faith and devoutness. They often attend Mass regularly, not just on Sundays but also during weekdays. Their religious activities are not just confined in the church, but often extend to their homes with altars or prayer corners. Filipino Catholics are also noted for their religious festivals and traditions. The most recognized is the annual "Sinulog Festival" in Cebu and "Ati-Atihan" in Aklan, both held in honor of the Santo Niño or the image of the child Jesus. They also have the Holy Week observation where processions, rituals, and re-enactments of Jesus Christ’s life take place. Their dedication to the Virgin Mary is also prominent, as evidenced by the annual "Flores de Mayo" or "Flowers of May". This is a month-long festival dedicated to the Virgin Mary which culminates in the Santacruzan procession. One distinct characteristic of Filipino Catholics is their mixture of indigenous beliefs with Catholic practices, owing largely to the country's pre-colonial animistic practices and the many years of Spanish colonization. This makes Filipino Catholicism quite unique in its practices and beliefs. Their expressions of faith could be seen as more emotional and personal compared to the more formal traditions of western Catholics. Lastly, Filipino Catholics place great importance on family and community. They believe that their faith should extend to their relationships with other people, characterized by care, respect, and mutual help.
